Meta plans to restrict more content for teenagers on Facebook and Instagram.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced plans to enhance content restrictions for teenagers on its platforms. The initiative aims to safeguard younger users from potentially harmful material online. As part of these changes, teenagers will no longer be exposed to posts from others discussing personal struggles with self-harm or suicide, even if they follow the user sharing such content.

Meta has disclosed that all users under the age of 18 will be placed in the most restrictive content control settings categories on Instagram and Facebook. This includes additional restrictions on search terms in the Explore sections on Instagram. While these settings already apply to new users, they will now be extended to encompass all teenagers using the apps.

The company emphasizes that these measures are designed to make it more challenging for individuals to encounter sensitive content or accounts across the apps. The implementation of these changes is scheduled to occur gradually over the coming months.

Regarding content related to self-harm and suicide on Instagram, Meta states that it is actively working to make such content less accessible. While users are allowed to share content discussing their personal struggles with suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders, Meta’s policy is not to recommend this content. The company is focused on making it harder to find and is introducing measures to hide search results related to suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders. Users conducting searches on these topics will be directed to expert resources for assistance. This update is expected to be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.

In addition to these changes, Meta has announced plans to send notifications to teenagers, encouraging them to review and update their privacy settings. These notifications aim to raise awareness among young users about the importance of managing their privacy settings on the platforms.
