Google Introduces New Generative AI Capabilities for Google Maps Platform and Google Earth

In a move to enhance developer tools and support urban planning, Google has unveiled new generative AI capabilities for Google Maps Platform and Google Earth. These advancements aim to provide fresh, real-world information to developers and urban planners, helping them solve complex geospatial problems more efficiently.

Grounding with Google Maps for AI Applications

With over 10 million websites and apps using Google Maps Platform, there’s a growing demand for up-to-date information in generative AI applications. Google is addressing this by introducing “grounding with Google Maps,” a feature that empowers developers to build AI-powered experiences using real-time place data. This ensures that answers generated by large language models (LLMs) reflect the latest information from 250 million locations.

Rivian Vehicles to Feature AI Summaries of Places

Expanding on its Gemini capabilities introduced at Google I/O, Google announced that Rivian vehicles will soon display AI-generated summaries of various locations, such as restaurants and shops. This feature, launching next month, aims to make it easier for drivers to access quick information about nearby places directly from their infotainment screens.

Generative AI for Urban Planning with Google Earth

Google Earth is also getting an AI boost. With Gemini capabilities, urban planners can gain city-level insights faster than ever before. For instance, transportation planners can identify areas needing more EV chargers by simply asking the system to map underserved zip codes. Google Earth’s multi-step reasoning provides insights in minutes, a process that traditionally took days.

These capabilities, developed with support from Google Research and X, will start pilot testing next month. Developers and urban planners can sign up to be early testers of these transformative tools.
